At work I was given an assignment by my boss to create a poster using only 1 photo, 1 typeface, and 1 quote. I was to concept the poster and make it as interesting as possible using these three assets. I chose a quote by land artist Robert Smithson which states "Artists themselves are not confined but their output is." I decided to play off this concept of confinement and incorporate it into the poster. I chose the image of a breaking light bulb to give a shattering effect. I also broke up the type and set the typography outside of the yellow border. This gives the assets a feeling of breaking free from their confinements. My initial idea was to print the "poster" on a transparent sheet and not frame it either. If I do in fact do this I will take photos and upload them.
On September 08, 2011 the southwest of the US had a 12 hour blackout that left nearly 7 million people without power. At the time, I lived in downtown San Diego and decided to go out and photograph the event. After walking the street I noticed how many people were out socializing with complete strangers and coming together as a community. It was the most festive I have seen a city on a non-holiday. It makes one think how caught up and distracted by technology we can be and how absorbed in our own lives we are that we can easily ignore the important things in life.
